RFM: What is your dream? What change would you like
to see in the world?
NW: Nothing happens if we don’t recognize how complex
and interrelated not only food systems are, but social
systems. And until we begin to deeply appreciate and
love diversity, rather than trying to control and change
and simplify so many processes—political processes with
dictatorships or agriculture processes with monocultures—
those are all violent, at some level, and very destructive.
In my dream world, we would begin to appreciate, not
just tolerate, but begin to cherish and love diversity and
begin to understand how interwoven we all are, and how
important it is to recognize and value each person—and in a
bigger context, different plants and animals. We’re crushing
diversity violently in so many domains, and in my world,
we would lift that oppression and begin to flourish and live
together harmoniously—with joy and beauty, of course.
I have children and grandchildren and I garden and I farm.
All of that grounds me and it makes me very aware of how
interdependent we all are: animals, plants, air, water, sisters,
brothers. We are one whole, we just have to recognize and
appreciate it.
