La Vía Campesina is a network of social movements with a
very horizontal structure. You could say we’re a movement
of movements. There are peasants, Indigenous peoples,
artisanal fishermen, and food sovereignty activists. The
fact of coming together strengthens this network… We’re
strengthening a process we’ve been building since La Vía
Campesina was created in 1992.
It gives me joy to connect with people who share the same
ideals, to talk with people from so far away, like Palestine,
Indonesia, Zimbabwe. It’s impressive to be able to talk with
people from so many parts of the world, from four different
continents, who are part of the same struggle. These are
mostly people who come from the countryside, who come
from a very humble background, but who are very welleducated, very aware of where they come from and where
they want to go. Being able to be with them is a wonderful
experience and it strengthens my own convictions.
