Seeds, Stories & Solidarity (Fall 2025) - Magazine - Page 31
There is understandable concern about generational
renewal in the movement: Are there enough young people
willing to stay in the countryside to steward the land and
take up the mantle of food sovereignty? Migration from
rural areas to cities is happening almost everywhere,
though the reasons vary. In places like North America and
Europe, land is too expensive for young people who want
to farm. In some places, rural areas can feel repressive or
unsafe, especially for women and queer folks. Still others
are displaced by land grabs and economic crisis.
The peasant youth who are fighting to remain on the land
and feed their communities are defying expectations,
reshaping what it means to be a peasant farmer today.
Their stories challenge old ideas of what a farmer looks like,
and ask us to imagine a movement bold enough to shift its
politics to meet them.
