Sri Lanka offers hope that the wave
of authoritarianism, repression, and
economic violence sweeping the globe
can be overcome through popular
struggle.
O
n her small farm in Sri Lanka, Anuka De Silva grows
60 varieties of rice, 12 varieties of banana, and
four varieties of mango. A typical day begins with a
breakfast of kanji—a rice porridge made from homegrown
aromatic rice, greens, and coconut—and ends peacefully
observing the dozens of bird species feeding at an
adjacent lake or perched against the colors of a vibrant
sunset.
In between, Anuka works tirelessly as part of a national
movement for land and agriculture reform and as a
member of the International Coordination Committee
of La Vía Campesina. She is part of collective organizing
efforts to address a rural crisis marked by indebtedness,
exploitation, and violence.
